Never do these 3 things when preparing for an interview
An interview is one of the most important times to showcase your best self, be on the best form, and carry out the best preparation. And I’m not saying that to scare you, but to prepare you!
First impressions really do count. According to LegalJobs, you only have 7 seconds to make a good first impression in an interview. So, I’ve come up with 3 things you should never do when preparing yourself for an interview. When I say never, I mean never!
1 – Never neglect researching the company you are interviewing for!
Failing to research the company can leave you unprepared to answer questions about the company’s mission, values, products/services, and culture. According to LegalJobs, nearly 50% of applicants wouldn’t get a job offer because of lack of knowledge about the company. Trust us, employers appreciate candidates who show a genuine interest in and understanding of their business.
2 – Don’t memorise your responses word for word.
Of course, you want to be as prepared as possible for any questions coming your way. But instead of memorising a script or exact repsonses to common questions, focus on understanding key points and examples so that you can adapt to different questions. You don’t want to come across as stiff and rehearsed, this will get in the way of building rapport and letting your personality shine through.
3 – Don’t forget to follow up!
This is arguably the most important point! Send a follow-up email to your interviewer. Thank them for their time and remind them of your interest in the role. Include where you see yourself in the company, the impact you can make, and your highlights from the interview. This will emphasise your interest in the role and might be what makes you stand out from your competition!
