A round-up of the National infrastructure assessment recommendations
The National Infrastructure Commission has set out recommendations to the government for the next 30 years, following their assessment.
We thought we would read through the report and highlight the main recommendations from the assessment, so you don’t have to!
One of the main takeaways from the assessment is that the government should not support the rollout of hydrogen heating; the National Infrastructure Commission states electric heat pumps are the only viable option for decarbonising buildings. From this, a specific recommendation has been made to provide a subsidy of £7,500 per property owner for installing a heat pump.
The recommendations also state that the government should reduce energy demand from buildings. It has been advised to extend the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund to deliver £5.1bn of capital spending on energy efficiency improvements, between 2024 and 2030 and rely directly on local authorities to deliver the program.
Energy companies have also been given recommendations. A highlight, is the recommendation to install energy efficiency improvements in households on lower incomes, by providing zero percent financing on households and small businesses for the cost of the energy-efficient installations.
