Never do these 3 things when applying for a new role

Applying for a new role can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. To increase your chances of success, you want to avoid certain pitfalls that could sabotage your application. So, I thought I’d share 3 things you should never do when applying for a new role… 1. Submitting a generic CV and cover letter Why it’s a mistake: A generic CV and cover letter shows a real lack of effort and genuine interest in the role you are applying for. Hiring Managers can easily spot a one-size-fits-all all application (trust me!), which suggests that you’re not particularly interested in their company or positions. What to do instead: Tailor your CV and cover letter for each application. Highlight relevant skills, experiences, and accomplishments that align with the job description. Address the cover letter to the hiring manager by name (if possible) and mention specific reasons why you’re excited about the role and the company. Customisation demonstrates your enthusiasm and dedication, making your application stand out! 2. Failing to research the company Why it’s a mistake: Employers expect candidates to have a basic understanding of their company and the industry they operate in. Failing to do so can make you seem uninterested or unprepared, which are red flags for any Hiring Manager! What to do instead: Research thoroughly! Understand the company’s mission, values, products, and any recent company news. Use this information to tailor your application and to prepare for the interview. Understanding what’s going on and how you can make an impact demonstrates your knowledge about the company and have a genuine interest in the role. 3. Ignoring Application Instructions Why it’s a mistake: Many job adverts include specific instructions for how to apply, such as submitting documents in a particular format, answering specific questions, or including a certain subject line in your email. Ignoring these instructions indicates a lack of attention to detail and an inability to follow directions. What to Do Instead: Read the job advert carefully! Follow all application instructions precisely. Double-check that you’ve included all requested documents and information. This will show the Hiring Manager that you can follow directions and are serious about the application process. A no-brainer! Want to significantly improve your chances of landing your next position? Avoid these common mistakes! Always customise your applications, research the company, and follow instructions to a tee. If you’re ticking these boxes every time you apply for a new role, I can guarantee your chances of standing out in the competitive job market will be higher!
